The last mitzvot of the Torah involve renewing our collective and individual commitments to the covenant. Our personal and collective renewal of the covenant binds us to a tradition and history many millennia old. Individually we are asked to write our own Torah. We can understand this as scribing or purchasing a Torah, or metaphorically seeking our own interpretation. Collectively, the Torah provides a specific ceremony for renewing the covenant, but here too we can think more broadly of what renewal might mean. Not a bad topic for our congregation at this time!
