To Renew Our Days — Vayelech

The Israelites ready to cross into the promised landThe last mitzvot of the Torah involve renewing our collective and individual commitments to the covenant. Our personal and collective renewal of the covenant binds us to a tradition and history many millennia old. Individually we are asked to write our own Torah. We can understand this as scribing or purchasing a Torah, or metaphorically seeking our own interpretation. Collectively, the Torah provides a specific ceremony for renewing the covenant, but here too we can think more broadly of what renewal might mean. Not a bad topic for our congregation at this time!
