The Greatness of Humility -Shoftim: Sept. 10, 2016

The Torah is uncomfortable with kings … but if you insist you want one to keep up with the neighbors please take some precautions. The king shouldn’t get too crazy about the appearance of wealth and its a good idea for him to study the Torah so he has some grounding in ruling a just society. And “his heart shouldn’t be haughty” — he shouldn’t feel superior to “his brothers.” What does humility have to do with being a good ruler?

Both Abraham and Moses exemplify humility and service in the Torah. They were also able to challenge power. What does humility really require of us and what do we gain from it?
